Kilim Rug

What is a Kilim Rug?

Kilims are flat-weave rugs, hand woven on looms, featuring geometric designs and natural, handmade traditional wool rugs.

Kilim Rugs weaving is a highly acclaimed folk art; they are handmade with natural dye and are recognized for their specific geometrical shapes. Famous for their rich colours, warm tones, and beautiful ethnic motifs and great deal of symbolism in the patterns used in each design, these rugs are simply irresistible and unmatched. Multi-utility nature of the rug in design and use as purely decorative pieces on the wall, or as prayer carpet, saddle pads, sofa and cushion covers, apart from being used as a floor-covering, are gaining them popularity world-over.

Kilim rugs are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands to produce a flat surface without pile. When the end of a colour boundary is reached, the weft yarn is wound back from the boundary point. Thus, a vertical slit forms between the two different colour areas where they meet. For this reason, most Rugs can be classed as "slit woven" textiles.

The slits produce very sharp-etched designs, emphasizing the geometry of the weave.  The weft strands carry the visible design and colour, are almost always wool, whereas the hidden warp strands can be either wool or cotton. Cotton, wool, and silk are all common choices of fibre used in weaving. The patterns usually consist of narrow stripes of shades of blues, greens, brownish yellow and red with small geometric designs.

These designs are centuries old designs that enhance their ultimate antique look. Due to the cultural aspects of these rugs, each region has its own traditions revolving around colours.

Kilim rugs  have been rated as one of the best products to add splendour to your interiors.
